So far we have explored the application of Archem starch-based powders in the packaging and now printing industry. Ultimately our broad range of powders are used as a barrier coating. We continue to learn and understand the change in printing technologies to ensure Archem powders remain relevant.
In printing powders were traditionally used to prevent sheets of paper/board wet with ink from sticking to each other while they dried in the machine delivery. Today they are often used by UV printing companies while printing, to aid separation of sheets within a stack during follow on trades in finishing.
Glossy sheets of paper have a tendency to stick together, much like two sheets of glass and separating them can be tough causing unwanted machine stoppages, a light dusting of Archem anti-set off powder overcomes this, allowing for smoother faster production in the finishing departments.
It is therefore no lie that the printing industry regards anti-set-off spray powder as a “grudge buy” or “necessary evil” as Ideally printers would prefer not to use it. However these spray powders remain the only practical way to ensure a stack of printed paper at the end of a printing press does not set-off.
How? Food grade starch powders derived from corn, potato, tapioca, rice or wheat – depending on the particle diameter sought – prevent these problems by creating an air gap essentially, this not only creates a physical gap but it also allows air circulation and exposure to oxygen necessary to the ink drying oxidation process.
The specialists at Archem work hard to not only manufacture highly accredited powders including:
- BG ETEM approved for low emissions;
